Sandwiches

Rock N’ Jenny’s Italian Subs – Escondido, CA

How many sandwiches have I had over a lifetime. Quite a bit I’d like to think. My love of sandwiches has grown over the years as I punish myself over freshly baked bread while counting carbs. We were in Escondido over the weekend and wanted to find a quick/cheap sandwich place to try out before we headed to a local brewery. I knew Rock N’ Jenny’s Italian Subs was nearby so we decided to try out this sandwich shop.

I didn’t think I’d enjoy the sandwich shop but the sandwich I had here at Rock N’ Jenny’s Italian Subs was one of the best things I’ve eaten all year.

ROCK N’ JENNY’S ITALIAN SUBS

The name on the building shows Rockn’ Jenny’s Italian Subs but their website shows Rock N’ Jenny’s Italian Subs. They are located right next door to Roma Market.  A reader suggested trying Rock N’ Jenny’s Italian Subs as she preferred their sandwiches over Roma Market.

There’s outdoor patio seating and a decently spacious seating area inside. You enter the shop and order from a cashier. You can see worker bees toasting bread and preparing a few sandwiches.

I think this is au jus for someone’s order.

They had multiple breads toasting.

There was a long line to order which I liked as it shows the popularity of the shop. There is only one cashier so ordering can be slow. A nice girl with a notepad started going through the line to take additional orders. She was incredibly nice and knowledgeable. The menu is behind the cashier. You pay on their iPad if using a credit card.

The seating area is to the right of the cashier/ordering station. We greatly appreciated the cold a/c circulating that afternoon as it was a warm day. There’s a self serve soda/water fountain machine.

Here’s a view from our table of the cashier/ordering area.

SIDE OF CHILI

The side of chili was topped with raw onions and cheddar cheese.

The chili was beefy, thick, and comforting. The spice level was spot on and I enjoyed this chili. Friend liked the beans inside the chili. We both thought the chili could have been served hotter.

OUR FAMOUS TURKEY SUB – 12 in $8.25

Freshly sliced. All white meat. Nutritious & delicious. This one made us famous! Added avocado for +$1.25

You can ask for the Works on any sandwich: lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, Italian dressing, pepperoncini peppers.

The picture does not do this enormous packed sub a lick of justice.

The toasted 12 inch sub was topped with extra onions (per request). The girl taking my order told me the Works doesn’t include onions so make sure to order onions if you like your sandwich that way. The onions are diced and placed on top.

Can you see the delicious oily Italian dressing coating all the nooks and crannies of this beautiful sandwich.

The toasted Italian roll was UNREAL. It was crusty on the exterior yet so soft and blissfully chewy everywhere else. I don’t like my breads soaked with any dressing as I fear the bread tasting soggy with the rest of the cold ingredients. But this Italian roll was perfectly, and I truly mean PERFECTLY, toasted so that the Italian dressing, mayo, mustard, lettuce, etc didn’t make the roll soggy.

They put the pepperoncini peppers on the side for me. I liked taking bites of the peppers after taking a bite of my sandwich.

HOT PASTRAMI $8.79 12 inch

Lean pastrami & melted mozzarella. Definitely a spicy masterpiece!

Friend ordered the hot pastrami as it came highly recommended. The Italian roll was toasted and the Works was added.

The hot pastrami sandwich was large and a nice bargain at under $9. The pastrami was flavorful but didn’t have the  magic as my turkey sub. Friend said the sandwich was fine but couldn’t compare to The Hat. We both thought the pastrami meat from The Hat stuffed in a toasted Italian roll from Rock N’ Jenny’s Italian Subs would seriously change lives. Needless to say, friend also loved the toasted Italian rolls here.

Service was great. The food took a while to arrive to your table but I didn’t mind that as each sandwich tasted freshly made. I asked a young staff member if the bread was made on premise but she said no, they’re made elsewhere but it’s with their own recipe. I believe the rolls are brought in daily.

I absolutely recommend Rock N’ Jenny’s Italian Subs. I want to drive back there today just to get the 12 inch Turkey Sub again. It was one of the best sandwiches I’ve had. The restaurant was packed when we got there but the crowd died down by the time we left. We didn’t finish our sandwiches and took them to go. Both sandwiches didn’t taste too bad a few hours later. The bread did get more wet but the sandwiches still tasted delicious.
