We don’t venture outside of Convoy for AYCE Korean BBQ often. I was surprised and curious when a new Korean BBQ restaurant opened in Mission Valley. The restaurant was brand new, modern, and not AYCE. I should have written ‘but not AYCE’ because Cdj about fainted when he saw the prices here at 356 BBQ & Bar. We tried to visit some months ago but the service was non existent and they wouldn’t put on any of the Sunday football games on their tvs. So we didn’t give this restaurant much thought after that.
Fast forward to present time and 356 BBQ & Bar now offers a few AYCE options: 1) the 355 for $25.99; 2) the 356 for $29.99; and 3) the 357 for $36.99. The prices are further discounted Mon-Friday for lunch. For example, you can get the 355 for $21.99 during those days from 11:30a-3pm.

The gluttony in all of us constantly searches for the unicorn all-you-can-eat Korean bbq. Specifically a lunch AYCE Kbbq. I had seen Taegukgi Korean BBQ House over the years but never tried them as the reviews were mixed. I’d do a quick drive-by peek of their empty patio when I would visit Zion Market right next door. So I was happy to share this gluttonous adventure with Cdj the past two weeks. Yeah. We visited two weeks in a row – both on Tuesdays in order to get the $15.99 lunch deal. The AYCE lunch option at Taegukgi Korean BBQ House normally costs $19.99 so the $4 savings on Tuesdays is a nice (almost) 20% savings. My friends and I always complain how there’s no affordable all you can eat Korean BBQs for lunch here in San Diego. We’ve paid the full dinner AYCE price at many places but never felt we ate enough, for lunch, to warrant the $22+ dollars. So I was curious when I kept seeing Roadem BBQ $9.99 AYCE lunch special when I was driving through Convoy. I read that it’s a limited all you can eat option with only five proteins to choose from. That’s totally fine with me especially if they’re offering banchan as well. So Cdj and I decided to visit Roadem BBQ the other day to check out this all you can eat lunch option.

I was excited when I heard an all you can eat Korean buffet was coming to Mira Mesa. This type of gluttony is only reserved for the elite of the elite (I love you Joey Chestnut). Joking aside, this part of town needed new AYCE blood that they could sink their fangs into. My go to AYCE Korean bbq has always been Jeong Won in Convoy. I’ve visited the Manna in Convoy but would always think of Jeong Won in the back of my head (sounds like a bad K-drama soap opera if you substitute ‘visited’ with ‘dated’). So I was a bit hesitant when friend suggested Manna BBQ in Mira Mesa for a mid week lunch as spending $21.99 for their cheaper AYCE option seemed crazy. That hesitation went away when he said the two magic words. “My treat”. Continue reading Manna BBQ – Mira Mesa, CA
Bring it Mira Mesa. BRING…IT. I’m sorry but I get so excited when I see a new Korean restaurant opening in the 92126 zippy here in San Diego. Tofu House recently opened in Mira Mesa and I’ve been waiting to try out this sister restaurant to their Tofu House in Convoy. V and I finally had the chance to meet for lunch so we both happily agreed to try this Tofu House last week. Continue reading TOFU HOUSE – MIRA MESA, CA
With the sincerest apologies, Happy Belated New Years! Christmas blew by so quickly and New Years…well, how can it already be 2015. I don’t understand. I feel like I have quite a bit of food stuff to write about in my blog pipeline but I’m going to post about a recent dinner trip to Kogi BBQ right here in beautiful freezing San Diego. Kogi BBQ is an AYCE Korean BBQ located in Kearny Mesa (close to Convoy). But let me show you why the AYCE excursion to Kogi BBQ was an epic failure (at NO fault of the restaurant)…

FRIEND’S HOUSE KOREAN
Gosh. What an odd name for a restaurant no? Like what my grandparents would say, in their broken English, to me and sis before we left for a class mate’s house or something. Friend’s House Korean has been on my radar for some time now because of their lunch specials and steamed dumplings. I’ve been going through a weird dumpling phase again. Go figure. I visited Friend’s House Korean some years ago and found it to be ‘meh’ at best. I ordered some sort of spicy squid dish and didn’t think too much of it back then.
Friend’s House Korean is located in the same plaza as Hanmi Bank and Dede’s. Just beware of the lunch and dinner rush these plazas get and don’t be surprised with the new dent in your car door when you’re done with dinner. I visited Friend’s House Korean last week for an early mid-week lunch at 11am.

Jeong Won Korean BBQ Buffet
This place is my go-to AYCE Korean BBQ here in San Diego. I believe they are the only KBBQ, here in San Diego, that offers ‘serve yourself’ meats/vegetables/banchan. I, personally, prefer that as it gives you a wealth of variety to choose from. Besides, I like LOOKING at what I can choose from at the buffet set up (versus looking at grainy photos on a menu). That’s just me though.
I’ve been very sketch on vegetables since my food poisoning incident. Well, specifically arugula and perhaps mushrooms. Just anything green and leafy. My stomach seems to only want meats and soups recently. I wasn’t really feeling an AYCE at 2:30p for a late lunch last week (especially right before the 4th of July long weekend). But CDJ convinced me to go. Continue reading Jeong Won Korean BBQ Buffet ($21.95 AYCE)- San Diego, CA
My quest for Korean Tofu continues in Mira Mesa. WTF is wrong with me. At least that’s what sis keeps telling me every time I suggest trying another tofu house. Plus, keep in mind these visits (to D&C Tofu House) were during the heat wave.
I haven’t heard much about D&C Tofu House from other bloggers so I wasn’t quite sure about this tofu house in Mira Mesa. The yelp reviews were mixed but that never surprises me. V actually visited D&C some months ago and said she (and her family) didn’t like the food. V said the best tofu house she’s visited so far (in Mira Mesa) was Tofu Ka with me and sis few weeks ago.
I’m not sure why I punish myself during these heat waves. I hate the heat so why is that I crave super hot soup during these times. It makes no sense.

Ok. Obviously, as you can see, I’ve been on a weird Korean tofu/BBQ kick for the past few weeks. I’ve been trying to keep it in the Mira Mesa part of town to keep it interesting.
Shozen has been around for ages and my family used to go there for their grille-at-the-table BBQ. But as Convoy grew, to be the mecca of all Asian foods, my family and I kinda forgot about Shozen.
I decided it was time to re visit this restaurant in hopes of finding a tofu+BBQ lunch deal. V was up for it as well.
