Don Pollo – Poway, CA

I’m glad I’m not the only person sick during this season. Not that I wish coughs and sniffles on friends but…it’s nice to have someone who shares the same miseries. That’s not grinch-y is it. Chicken soup has been known to help get over a bad cold. Not sure the science behind it but I sure know that a hot bowl of steaming chicken broth makes me feel so much better. I heard about Don Pollo some years ago. They make home made chicken soup, grilled chicken plates/tacos/tortas, and have also non chicken (pollo) items. Cdj and I were both in the area one afternoon and agreed to meet at Don Pollo for a quick lunch.

Las Brisas Restaurant (OMG ocean views) – Laguna Beach, CA

My last two nights in Taipei were filled to the brim with family time. That’s all that seemed to matter. Saying goodbye to them on the final day brought uncontrollable tears (on my part) and the question, from my grandma, when will you come back? My mom took the same flight as me so the 12 hour flight back to Los Angeles wasn’t as horrible. Walking out of the Thomas Bradley International terminal felt surreal. The non-humid weather and the clear blue skies felt calming. The weather was so hot before I left for Asia so the change felt like a relief (considering how humid and hot Taiwan was when I was there).

Cdj was my uber driver back to San Diego. He’s an ok uber driver. But he likes to take detours without the client’s approval. Who does that.

He wanted to go to Laguna Beach as he lived there for some time and wanted to have a late lunch there. Nothing sounded worse than that as I had just flown 12 hours and been up many hours prior to that. His uber fee came in the form of a free meal so ok fine. Pick the fanciest restaurant with the grumpiest friend.

I knew it would be a fun adventure when we found parking right in front of Las Brisas Restaurant and when I secured…

Galaxy Taco – La Jolla, CA

I don’t think I can convey how happy a rainy day makes me feel. It’s even harder to express that happiness when that rainy day falls on a weekday that I have free for lunch. I hadn’t heard much about Galaxy Taco in La Jolla but was game for trying them out since their menu looked interesting. They are located in the La Jolla Shores area and even have a small private parking lot. Chef Trey Foshee, of George’s at the Cove, is owner of Galaxy Taco so that was another incentive to try this restaurant sooner than later.

Lucha Libre (North Park)

Lucha Libre opened a sister location in North Park some time ago. I’ve been visiting North Park more often and have passed by their new location several times. There’s no parking and signage for this location is quite minimal. I rarely crave Mexican food but one thing that I absolutely crave is Lucha Libre’s thick green garlic salsa. Friends don’t even blink an eye when I suggest going to Lucha Libre as they just shrug and say ‘you jonesing for their salsa today’.

Not their burritos. Not their tacos. Not their ‘anything’. Just that salsa. So I was happy when friend agreed to visit Lucha Libre in North Park over the weekend.

El Agave (Old Town)

Out of town friends constantly remind me that San Diego is the most beautiful city in the world. I’ve visited Old Town more often in the last year than I have since I’ve resided in San Diego. I was surprised by the quality and variety of Mexican restaurants I’ve tried on those visits. I’ve always been curious about El Agave since I see this restaurant almost every time we visit Old Town. They are located on the second floor above a liquor store and share a parking lot so it was easy finding a spot in Old Town that weekend afternoon.

Mama Testa

I was smiling when I saw Mama Testa coming to Mira Mesa. I had seen the build out of their new location when I would visit this plaza. They were originally located in Hillcrest and garnered a fan base due to their appearance on an episode of Bobby Flay’s Throwdown some many years ago. I visited their Hillcrest location once but never visited them after. I remember liking the tacos so was excited to try out their new location in Mira Mesa one day for lunch.

Casa Sol y Mar – Del Mar, CA

I visited Casa Sol y Mar two years ago with Snooks and Toxie to try their Happy Hour. We all collectively thought the food was mediocre and the staff a bit rude. So there wasn’t ever an urge to return. But a group of friends recently wanted to get together for lunch and one of the girls suggested Casa Sol y Mar. I wasn’t going to throw in my .02c (shocker I know) as I figured perhaps the restaurant had improved since my last visit. Plus, hello, they have complimentary fresh chips and salsa.   Continue reading Casa Sol y Mar – Del Mar, CA

The Hake Kitchen and Bar (Yelp Event) – La Jolla, CA

Yelp recently partnered with The Hake Kitchen and Bar in La Jolla to host dinners for those that were lucky enough to get in. Each person was able to invite one guest. You would be able to share three appetizers, one dessert, and two drinks between you and your guest. The restaurant would call you with a date and time of the week that worked best for both parties. I was quite blown away by this offering and so hoped that I’d get in as I’ve wanted to try Hake Kitchen and Bar for so long. I’ve had my eye on their Sea Scallop Tiradito for over a year now. So I was elated to have the opportunity to finally try out this dish (and a few others) without maxing out my already maxed out credit cards.    Continue reading The Hake Kitchen and Bar (Yelp Event) – La Jolla, CA

DON RIOS (previously MXN previously Santanas) – Rancho Penasquitos

I grew up hearing about Santanas as everyone in school just loved their burritos so much. I never really ate there so it wasn’t a big deal to me when Santanas changed to MXN. I recently drove by MXN in Rancho Penasquitos and noticed a new sign that said Don Rios where MXN used to be. So alright, curious nosy bee that I am, I decided to stop in and take a look.     Continue reading DON RIOS (previously MXN previously Santanas) – Rancho Penasquitos

My family and friends generally assume I’m having a bad day if they find out I’m eating Mexican food for any meal. Trust me – it’s totally easy to have a bad day by 7a and have a breakfast burrito to punish yourself for it. It happens. I don’t remember what exactly happened that morning I wanted to try out Vallarta Express. I’m trying to remember CDJ’s schedule of my moods for the week but I’m totally drawing a blank. It musta been a Tuesday since that’s the day of the week he says I’m generally bored (or maybe it was a Wednesday which is when he thinks I tend to be violent which is a crock of shiyit).
